(Washing of the Feet, Duccio di Buoninsegna, 14th cent.)
O God, who places symbols for us
Like candles that light up our dark places,
We thank you that Jesus was willing
To get his hands dirty,
And told us to do the messy services
Like washing tired, dusty feet.
We thank you for the bread and wine we share
As Jesus taught, to help remember him.
Quite probably, we'll never understand
How sharing bread and wine
Can somehow make the world make sense again,
And give us strength to do those dirty jobs.
We thank you that we don't have to understand,
Just be grateful.
Thank you, God, for work,
For bread and wine, and most of all,
For sending your son as our teacher.
Amen.
